============================================================ CAMRA Victoria October Event Wrap-Up By: Sean Clark, Communications Director, CAMRA Victoria
Back on October 26th the CAMRA Victoria faithful merged together at ** Axe & Barrel Brewing Company ( for our monthly meeting. It was a well attended evening for the members that came to Langford, all the more better considering what else was happening that evening downtown, (more on that later.)
First of all, a huge thank-you again to Elton from ** West Coast Brewery Tours ( for providing our members that RSVP’ed in advance safe and reliable transportation to and from the event from the meeting point at Moon Under Water Brewery. The van was sold out and packed with eager members looking for a fun evening. Those that didn’t take the van and arrived on their own took advantage of the extended happy hour menu in the restaurant portion, (myself included as I arrived about 30 minutes earlier by bus straight from work.)
Pics including a row of tasters, a sleeve of Knockers Porter during the pre-event happy hour, the menu board and taps, and Andrew Tessier talking to the members. Once we all arrived, we were greeted by head brewer Andrew Tessier, who welcomed us all and started us off with some tasters of his flagship beers. Throughout the evening we tasted his Langford Logger, the Westshore IPA, Fruity Mother Pucker and the Knockers Porter as our alloted samples. Some also got to try small tastes of others, including the Pumpkin Ale and the Rye Pale Ale, all of which were delicious! And for those that were interested, he took us inside the small brewery portion where he explained how he’s approached working there in the just over a year since he moved over from Swan’s. One of the interesting tidbits he shared is that he’s looking to adding a packaging line of some sort, possibly in the new year.
More pics of the members inside the tasting room and shots from the brewery.
We then moved to the restaurant portion where CAMRA Victoria President Greg Garner thanked everyone for attending and coming so far out to the boonies of Langford! He went over some wrap-up news of past events and info, and updated everyone on upcoming material. Then it became a mix and mingle, where everyone that stuck around grabbed some food and beverage and chatted, and a few even won an Axe & Barrel gift card. Congrats to those that did.
All told it was a good evening, with Andrew being a fantastic host as always, and Elton being the ever excellent guide! Thank you once again to all who attended, and to Axe & Barrel for hosting us and West Coast Brewery Tours for providing the transportation.
We look foward to seeing everyone at our next members event on December 2nd, the details which can be found below.
Swan’s Thomas Uphill Amber Ale Launch Event Wrap-Up
By: Glen Stusek, Past President, CAMRA Victoria
(This was happening the same evening as our Axe & Barrel event mentioned above, so Glen was gracious enough to provide us a nice write-up of the evening’s proceedings. Enjoy!)
The logo for Swan’s new beer It was my honour and pleasure to be in attendance and represent CAMRA BC at ** Swan’s Brewpub ( on Thursday, October 26th, for the Thomas Uphill Amber Ale Launch Event. This event was very well attended by members of the Uphill family tree, several who had traveled from Fernie and elsewhere in BC to be in attendance (2 long tables worth of people, in fact).
Chris Lukie, Swan’s brewer, welcomed the crowd and provided the crowd with an overview of the beer, his thoughts and reasoning why he chose amber as the style. I thoroughly enjoyed this well-balanced, flavorful take on a beer that I think would have been enjoyed by BC beer drinkers in Thomas Uphill’s day, and will make a great addition to Swan’s already strong lineup.
Wayne Norton, writer and historical consultant, then provided an interesting overview of Thomas Uphill, BC;s longest serving MLA. One of Thomas Uphill’s descendants then spoke and provided further insights into the man from that unique perspective. Last but not least, Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons provided his thoughts to the crowd
For further information about this most entertaining evening, please see the excellent write-up from Patrick Newman, beer writer for Camosun College’s Nexus newspaper (he writes better than I do!!)

And, in a most fitting way, seeing as the event was to pay tribute to BCs longest serving MLA, here is the link to MLA Simons’ comments in the BC Legislature

Cheers! 6th Annual Winterbrau Wrap-Up By: Sean Clark, Communications Director, CAMRA Victoria
On the afternoon of Saturday, November 4th, ** Canoe Brewpub ( hosted their ever-popular and highly sought Winterbrau festival, which was in it’s 6th year. The event always sells out, and this was no exception. 18 breweries plus the hosts Canoe all brought between 1-2 different fall/winter style beers, so there was something for every taste.
Shots from this past Saturday’s Winterbrau, including the event’s music guests Bucan Bucan, myself with Kim McIvor, president Greg Garner and treasurer Mark Rennie, the upstairs portion with more breweries, and shot of the lower level and s sampling of the beer and food with the brewery listing Standouts I noticed from the event included: ** TWA Dogs ( Choco Chili Milk Stout, ** SOB’s ( Imperial Red Ale & Scotch Ale, ** Spinnakers ( Titanic Stout, Swan’s Export Stout, ** Trading Post’s ( Black IPA, Canoe’s Cherry Saison and the return after 12 years of ** Phillips ( Black Toque CDA. That’s right, one of the original Cascadian Dark Ale’s, (otherwise known as a Black IPA,) made it’s triumphant return at Winterbrau and it was as good as ever. And now it’s back in bombers and at the brewery!
I had the opportunity to speak briefly with head brewer Daniel Murphy, where he shared with us some info regarding possible changes coming to Canoe going into the new year. Some of them included:
– a possible 2nd day added to next year’s Winterbrau, which may include different breweries each day, (similar to VBW’s Cask Nights.)
– a re branding of the iconic brewery, possibly with new beers/logos/names at the forefront.
Take each of these items with a grain of salt, but do stay tuned to our Facebook page and Canoe’s page and the CAMRA Victoria newsletters and emails when(if) info becomes available.
It was a wonderful event again, with incredible beers and a great selection of appies served throughout the four hour event. I’ve always considered this to be one of my favorite, if not most favorite events due to the atmosphere being almost like a private party full of real beer connoisseurs. It makes me look forward to next year even more, whether it stays the current course or adds to what is already a stellar event! Vancouver Island Beer News
Mount Arrowsmith Brewing takes top honours!:
A huge congratulations to Parksville’s Mount Arrowsmith Brewing Company for taking home Brewery of the Year at this year’s BC Beer Awards last month in Vancouver. The brewery, headed up by Head Brewmaster Dave Woodward, beat out some tough competition. A huge feat for a brewery just barely a year old. Other island breweries took home awards as well, check out ** ( for all the winners and pictures from the big event.
Sooke Brewing Company nearing opening:
Announced just yesterday on their Facebook page, Sooke Brewing Company stated that they are planning to open their doors within 2 weeks. This is exciting news for the craft beer lovers out there, and I can’t wait to try their very first beers. Stay tuned for more info for their opening date, or check out: ** (
*****Breaking***** ANOTHER SOOKE BREWERY!?!?!
Completely unknown to most everybody, myself included, is another brewery coming to Sooke! Bad Dog Brewing Company, set to open at some point on 7861 Tugwell Road, has clearly been planning under the radar as I’ve not heard of them in any of the standard brewery publications.
I only stumbled across their site via their Facebook page while compiling this newsletter, but according to their site they’ve got 4 beers and their tanks appear to be in place, so they may be opening any time now.
This is exciting, completely unexpected and unprecedented. What excellent news to see another brewery coming along. I’ve emailed them, so stay tuned once we get more info.
